Gamma, my glorious Silkie roo died suddenly,also my adorable Silkie hens Nugget & Elena passed. Freckles, my frizzled Polish was killed by a hawk.
I haven't wanted to blog about any of these events, but that's why there aren't any birds available for sale at this time. I didn't want to respond to emails, or talk about my birds at all (which is very unlike me) I was incredibly disappointed & sad at what felt like an enormous loss. I am an imperfect chicken farmer, and I'm learning to accept it! Rather than hide the fact that some of my birds have died, I've decided to share my struggle. I feel so incredibly blessed to have any chickens at all, and having the ability to go right outside my backdoor to visit with my flock is such a source of happiness for me.
Dharma, my sweetheart lavender Silkie went for a little walk in the driveway yesterday, its been raining non stop, but she waited for a break in the rain & then wandered out. Below are pics of her & Prim.   
Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in my birds, & I apologize I didn't respond to your emails-- now you know why!
So,  I'm starting 2017 with fewer chickens, but with a lot of optimism! I will come back with a stronger flock of lovelies in the future.

I HAVE A NEW WONDERFUL ROOSTER & HE IS AWESOME. SO AWESOME I HAVE TO WRITE IN ALL CAPS!

YES,  HE  IS  A  FRIZZLED  WHITE  CRESTED BANTAM  POLISH  &  HIS  NAME  IS STEFFAN- WITH AN ACCENT & ATTITUDE

Ok, he is pretty amazing. I was so incredibly lucky to get this wonderful little guy. The past couple of weeks I've been spending time with him and getting him acclimated to his new home. These pics don't do him justice-- he is that cool! 
​He is the sweetest, most gentle dude. Makes the most adorable noises. He was hand raised and is so comfortable just hanging out on my arm or chilling nearby while I do chores. He is a terrific example of a tame, mellow rooster who was given a lot of love & attention as a youngster. It makes a huge difference. 
I will continue to give him lots of love, and can't wait for him to have his own little frizzled family this Spring.

She was one of my first Polish, and when she was a chick I used to constantly carry her around in the hood of my sweatshirt. She would always get tangled up in my hair  & probably hated the snuggling, but I forced the love on her anyways.

Vivi was buried on the border of our yard & the vineyard. My darling husband dug the hole & helped me say goodbye.He said "She was OLD. Its OK.She was a good old bird" but I was still sad.
When one of our animals passes,  we always sing Goodnight by the Beatles as our final farewell.
​ I get all weepy no matter what. 
My husband sang with me, and that was very nice.

I have been very fortunate to spend some quality time with my flock lately, and I am so impressed by how attentive my roosters are. They are super sweet, docile, and always put the needs of their hens first. Without the boys, the hens are pretty lost. Both of my main roosters get along well, and protect the flock together. Since we've got a pretty large space to free range now, the guys split up & do a great job making sure everyone is safe & accounted for. 
At the end of the evening, Gamma & Randy round up the girls and they all snuggle up together in their "Silkie Piles" So cute. 
]]><![CDATA[Boys from the past]]>Tue, 20 Oct 2015 15:18:34 GMThttp://www.kissmychicks.com/blog/boys-from-the-pastWhen I lived in a rental house, I was not allowed to have any roosters, and a limited number of hens. In order to keep peace with my landlord & my neighbors, we could only have a few hens & I would hatch chicks in the garage. Or the "chickatorium" as I liked to call it

I would order fertile eggs from other breeders, which is great for diversity, but every 4-6 months it would turn into a sad day at our place-- the first little warbling crow would permeate our home. Sometimes multiple crows, all at the same time! Then I'd go out to the garage & look into the pens (really they were large plastic rubbermaid set-ups) & see which of my adorable little chicks had made the transition-- they would only be able to stay with me for a couple of days longer. *Sniff sniff* 

It was heartbreaking to give up the little guys that I had hand raised, but rules are rules. Luckily, I never had a problem finding wonderful loving homes for my roosters. I'm still in touch with many of the families that adopted my little roos, so that makes me very happy. 
Now that I have a permanent space to raise my birds, I am thrilled to have some roosters around. But I still miss some of my little roos from the past.

I'll admit, it's been too long since I've posted-- it's been a busy summer! 
The chickens are doing great & we've finished almost all the construction projects in the chicken yard. Now it's time to get ready for fall & winter, or maybe just start thinking about it. Let's keep it real here.
