New Chicken Yard!

5/23/2015

Im getting a new fence built for our garden area, so the chickens will be able to free range in a completely secure space. In the meantime, weve got a pet fence set up around the coop so they can still roam a little bit. They obviously dont like being restricted, but its gotta be done! As a treat, I pulled out some kale from the garden so they could have a snack.

70 degrees! Spring is in the air!

After a little bit of rain, the skies have cleared & the weather is gorgeous! We haven't started planting our Spring garden yet, so the chickens have been able to roam about the yard & do what they do best-- scratch & peck. Good for the soil, and fun to watch! Some of my shy guys & gals like to hang out on the side of the house while the other chickens do the dirty work.

We no longer have a lot of Squirrel visitors, so the old Squirrel chair has been converted into a Chicken treat chair for now.

Silkie Face

The weather has been so pleasant. I am thrilled that I can let the chickens out to enjoy the sunshine in December. Our winter garden is pretty much empty, so I have just been sitting out in the dirt watching the chicklets cruising around the yard.
I took these photos yesterday of Pearl. She looks so perfect. So pristine & refined from far away...

Fall color

I spent most of the afternoon winter-izing the coop. It's a big muddy mess, but I'm working on some new techniques to keep it dry & clean over the next few months.
Rainy weather is on it's way, but the colors are still beautiful. I had to take a couple of pics of our driveway while the leaves are still on the vines & trees.
I also put up my snowflake Christmas lights along our back fence-- which is a huge deal for me because I'm a short gal, so I have to use a ladder for basically everything. After mucking the coop & lugging pavers around the yard, I took a some quick pics & retreated the the warm house!

Randy, Gamma, Buffy, Francis, Fluffy, Pearl & Nugget were all hanging out in the corner of the yard on Thanksgiving day. I'm a vegetarian, so all fowl were safe at our place!

I cant believe it. I haven't posted since May?!
Lots of BIG changes have occurred the past 6 months, some sad, some wonderful.I guess that's just life!

Fall is here & I've been working on pulling out the Summer garden. I think it's the favorite time of year for the chickens-- they get to free range in our veggie garden- scratching & pecking whatever they want.
Here's a little slide show of the past few weekends worth of chicken work...

Mother Hen, you have inspired me once again! Thank you!

Ignore each other.
At night they snuggle up on the perch together, but during the day---no recognition unless absolutely necessary!
