My breakfast companions

Nom nom noms...
I woke up perky & was in a surprisingly good mood for 530am!
Went out to check on the chicks, & decided to take a couple fluffers back inside with me to the kitchen. I wanted some snuggling while I drank my coffee & prepared for the day. I figured the chickies would like to nestle up in my sweatshirt, which they did-- but they also got their own breakfast suite.
Because I relentlessly begged my darling boyfriend for more wooden wine boxes, I now have lots of boxes perfect for spoiling chicks. I just set up the box (food, water, puppy pads for poops) & I can transport them comfortably. Niiice.

Also   got my first blue-green  egg of 2013 ---->
Way to go, ladies!

Ok, this is ridiculous.
It took me at least AN HOUR to upload this one silly video. Really. I have no idea why. I have a few other really cute ones, but sheesh-- save it for another day!

T-Rex, you're beautiful!

Here's the first hatch of 2013. I'm in the process of cleaning out their brooder, so they're going bonkers-- at only a week & a half old, they are very healthy & happy. I had just fed them & given them fresh water, but you wouldn't know it by watching this video! Little piggies! -- every time you hear a "clicking" noise it's one of them drinking out of the rabbit waterer. Using a syringe really helps them get acclimated to a drip system. It's also totally precious!

This hatch consists of Silkies, Bantam Polish, and some Polkies (bantam frizzled polish/silkie crosses) look out for T-Rex (photo above) our Polkie Showgirl!

I finally got a "Grandpas Feeder" It's a hinged metal feeder that is supposed to cut down on food waste. The chickens step up & the feed door opens. They jump down & the feed door closes. Like a little mechanical chicken trough. Only, this one is NOT little. Yes, I did purchase the large version, but I didn't realize how BiG it is! Look at Leo (& he is 10lbs or so) it arrived in an enormous box- I am thrilled yet kinda intimidated! I know it's safe for bantams, but I'm definitely going to have to place some weights on the step- my Silkies are lightweights

Mini vacation time is approaching, & I'm hoping my Grandpa Feeder will allow the chickens to feed themselves during the day-- I predict Harmon will approve

This is Reina- she sleeps like this. Obviously, not intimidated at all by the large shiny metal contraption.

<--Adorable little partridge chick, just calm & pretty as can be. She was hatched under Carla B. along with her sister. 3 days late. It was so cold I figured the hatch would be a goner. Just when I was ready to give up & throw out the eggs, I lifted up Carla & there they were! Despite the freezing temperatures, she was kept warm & safe under mama. Now everyone is inside my "chickatorium" which is so warm it feels like a tropical vacation. If there weren't so many peeps & poops, it might be a relaxing place to hang out.

I had to post this photo of my lil' turd of a rooster, Harmon. The other day I went outside to take some pics of my new Silkies & I swear Harmon would not leave me alone! He always gives me attitude when I first come into the coop, but he stuck his face into almost every single photo. I kept shooing him away, but as soon as I refocused my camera he would pop back in again. Out of 10 pics, he's in 8 of them.

Welcome to the world, baby dinosaur!

Yesterday, my hatch-a-thon began. Yay! It's been a while since I've had some lil' babies. I want to say I was especially excited for this hatch because it's been so long-- but I'm ALWAYS SUPER EXCITED to hatch baby chicks. It's also messy, stressful & at times a bit terrifying. Behold-- the miracle of life!

Today & tomorrow will be an exciting day for us here at KMC. I've got my Catdance Silkies & Shaynas Silkies pipping & zipping. I am thrilled that 2013 is going to be full of fun & fluffy chicks. Lot's of hard work, but totally worth it.  Carla B. and Elena have a full clutch in the broody box, so I predict they will have some peeps under them this morning.

Last night my first 2 chicks hatched. Both Paints. Love those polka dots! But I got a surprise on the second one.....

. . . . Everyone please rise & give a big welcoming round of applause. . . . . . . .

It's a SHOWGIRL!! Thats right, a bare necked American Paint Silkie. She will have a puffy crest & body, but a bare neck with a little "bow tie" of feathers in front.
I've hatched one showgirl before, a while ago, but this little chick looks like a baby dinosaur. Kinda super cute.

Prehistoric fabulousness!

This is the first Xmas card i received at my new house- and i think it's the best!! No cheesy snowmen, no warm fuzzy holiday greetings, just some renegade critter action- because nothing says Merry Christmas like black ski masks with tattoos & red snow caps on chubby animals! Courtesy of my good friend Ryan in San Francisco. Miss her.
