I might have to put a chicken on a floatie today & cruise around the pool. Just for a minute.

Yeah, not THIS dog. Not to be trusted alone with the chickens. But she's real pretty.

Yeah, THIS dog. That's the one I'm talking about
Most of the time, when I say "My dog did that?!" it's mostly in the form of an exasperated question (you didnt really just pee on the bed did you?) or after a complete emotional meltdown on my part (flip-flops left outside are always eaten by dogs--don't you know that?)

Not today. Today I was proud.
Since the weather has been so epic, I've been taking several of the chickens to forage in our courtyard. We've been planting a lot in there, but there's still weeds so the chickens get to spend the afternoon scratching away while I observe them in the sunshine. It's a good gig.
I have to carry the birds from their coop outside, then bring them inside, through the house, and into the courtyard. I can only handle 2-3 birds at a time so it takes me several trips back & forth. The courtyard is enclosed & safe, but I left Leo with the first set of birds while I went to fetch the other chickens. When I came back, Reina, our frisky golden lab had come into the courtyard (she's not allowed to be alone with the birds just yet) and Leo was standing in front of her guarding the chickens!
It was pretty cute. Leo has been with chickens for a few years now, but Reina is still learning that chickens are pets, not live squeaky toys. All of us spent the afternoon together in the sunshine-- and I felt very proud that my old little chihuahua has turned into a working farm dog after all.
